Letters to state legislators regarding Florida Kratom Ban - 4/9/2017

I sent the same letter to both of my Florida state representatives (Sen. Jack Latvala and Rep. James "J.W." Grant) regarding Florida Kratom Ban that Kristen Jacobs was once again proposing. I also sent this letter to:
U.S. Rep Gus Bilirakis
Members of the Florida Appropriations Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice:
Senator Aaron Bean
Senator Randolph Bracy
Senator Dennis Baxley
Senator Jeff Clemens
Senator Keith Perry

Thank goodness that, with the hard work of the AKA and the diligence of the constituency, the bill was killed.
None of these legislators sent me a reply letter.

Major Concern for HB183 and SB424 Bills

Letter to Representative James "J.W." Grant (My State House Rep, District 64):
My name is [Spaethon] and I am a -- year old from ---------, Florida. I have grave concerns for the HB 183 and SB424 bills, which is currently being reviewed by the Criminal Justice Committee. I am writing you as a strong supporter and beneficiary from the natural remedy, Mitragyna Speciosa (otherwise known as Kratom). I have suffered a kidney condition and subsequent surgeries beginning in 2007, as well as a herniated disc in my lumbar region I suffered 2 years ago; both of which Kratom provides an immeasurable level of relief. I first discovered Kratom 5 years ago and I now have a natural method to successfully overcome my chronic pain while also alleviating my stress and depression, both stemming from a daily life plagued with chronic pain. I can spend time with my wife and daughter, we can take weekend trips, I can take long walks, and simply enjoy the benefits of everyday life so many take for granted.

Without stating the very obvious, I wish not to take opioid medication. The pill mill epidemic was a massive embarrassment and societal strain in Florida. Lawmakers should be well aware of this. Likewise, the nationwide opioid crisis is by far the worse drug epidemic we have ever seen and Florida is not exempt from the situation. Here we have a plant that has not been altered, chemically engineered, nor synthesized in order to be effective. A leaf is plucked, dried, ground to a fine material, and brewed as a tea. Kratom is not a relative of the opium family, rather Kratom belongs to the coffee family. Although little study has been performed on Kratom, it is believed that certain alkaloids in Kratom have some interaction with opioid receptors in the body. This does not classify Kratom as an opioid. If this justifies Kratom as being labeled an opioid, then dark chocolate, sugar, nicotine, cayenne & chili peppers, and menthol should likewise be opioids, as these substances also bind with opioid receptors in the human brain.

The primary “justification” the DEA had for implementing a temporary ban on Kratom was citing Kratom as being the cause of 14 worldwide deaths in recent years. This number has since been reduced to just 1 casualty, and even that individual’s demise is under question. Up to 5 million Americans have used Kratom at least once and to put it bluntly, Kratom is not killing people. Rather people are using Kratom to cure themselves from opioid addiction, among many other ailments. In a survey conducted involving 6400 Kratom users, 51% use Kratom for pain management, 14% use to combat anxiety, 9% use for opioid addiction, 8.8% use to treat depression, and just 1.62% use for recreational purposes. Kratom is here as a completely natural solution to some of the massive problems our society faces today.

Kratom is an absolutely vital necessity in our society; especially since Kratom can be a key to cutting down the opioid epidemic. Countless thousands are using Kratom as a means to stop their opiate dependencies. People like myself are finding pain relief in Kratom, thus having no need for opioid medication. Kratom does not produce a “high” like opioids, nor does Kratom pull people into dependency. People who use Kratom for relief are not stealing from their families, they are not robbing stores, and they are not overdosing. Kratom is not consuming lives, rather it is providing much better lifestyles.

It is imperative that you vote AGAINST HB183 and SB424. There is so much dishonest information out there designed to paint Kratom as a dangerous substance, which could not be farther from the truth. We are Americans and as free citizens of this country, we should have the right to choose a natural herbal remedy over a dangerous, addictive, pharmaceutically-manufactured drug. It is simply not choosing a lesser of two evils. Kratom does not destroy lives, rather it saves them. As a Floridian who uses Kratom as a means for a better life, please take people like me into consideration. People who suffer from debilitating ailments and refuse to take pharmaceutical pain killers; people who live much better lives thanks to Kratom. I deeply thank you very much for your time.
Most respectfully,
-[Spaethon]
