Letter to Florida State Senator Eleanor Sobel - 3/14/2015

Dear Senator Eleanor Sobel,

As a Florida citizen, I wish to voice my concerns regarding Bill SB 764 and its impact on the herb Kratom. I believe that scheduling Kratom as an illegal drug is a terrible idea that has me quite worried. Kratom is a federally legal medicinal herb that must remain legal for those who wish to use it for their personal medicinal purposes. People have found Kratom to be extremely beneficial against the fight of chronic pain among other ailments. Banning this herb will further eliminate our freedom from the pharmaceutical industry and from addictive pharmaceutical narcotics.

I have no medical insurance and suffer from inflammation of my kidneys called Hydronephrosis. This inflammation causes pain and pressure that takes a toll on my daily life. Having Kratom available has allowed me to enjoy daily life without the need for opiate-based pain killers that are scientifically proven to be highly addictive. Furthermore, I have the benefit of saving hundreds of dollars per month on doctor visits and medications that provide the same level of relief Kratom does. Best of all, Kratom does not have the addictive properties prescription narcotics possesses. I know this first-hand. Several times I have endured financial hardships and had to spend days and sometimes weeks with no Kratom available to me. During this period I experienced no level of withdraw symptoms or dependency like I did when doctors were prescribing me Oxycodone. I had to endure my daily pain with no medicinal help but the lack of Kratom did not make matters worse at all.

Look back to the dreaded pill mill epidemic our state suffered through less than a decade ago. I have read that many victims of this awful time turned to Kratom as a beacon of light at the end of a dark tunnel. If lawmakers are attempting to compare Kratom to opiates, I would rather have a population using Kratom to supplement the opiates that plague our society. But Kratom and opiates cannot be considered as similar. They are not even remotely related in my opinion. At the height of the pill mill epidemic, more than 13,000 Floridians died from overdoses while no fatalities can be directly linked to Kratom. There are so many benefits Kratom has shown since gaining popularity in America. Just look through the variety of forums and threads regarding the use of Kratom online. You will find an ocean of benefits this herb has provided for people.

I am a registered voter and a very concerned citizen. Please keep my letter in your thoughts as this bill moves through its upcoming stages. Do not allow an herbal remedy that has helped so many of our fellow citizens fall into the category of controlled substances. Also, do not allow the agenda of pharmaceutical companies stand in the way of you and the citizens that depend on you to make the right decisions in our Senate. Thank you so much for your time.

With sincerest regards,
-[Spaethon]
