Letter from the DEA in response to my letter to President Obama - 12/1/2016

I wrote a letter to President Obama during the panic of September, 2016 and the White House forwarded my letter to the DEA (my letter to Pres Obama is below the DEA letter). I subsequently received this in the mail:

Just a little comment on the DEA letter:
They stated that the DEA is accepting comments from the public regarding Kratom alkaloids, and the comment period will be open until December 1, 2016. Yet, they decide to wait until December 1 to write this letter to me. Good think I knew about the commenting period already!

My letter to President Obama. I also sent this same letter to the following:

U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations

U.S. Energy and Commerce Committee

Dear Mr. President,

I have just learned of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s decision that will take the lives of thousands of American Citizens in the months to come. I received the unexpected and shocking news that the herbal medicinal remedy Kratom will be added to the list of Schedule 1 Substances on September 30, 2016. This natural miracle has drastically improved the lives of Americans and will soon be added to a list of substances that kills tens of thousands annually.

I have never felt such a betrayal of my Government. I have celebrated my right to vote for the past 14 years. I believe the power of voting empowers me with a voice and the ability as an American citizen to be involved with our Government. However, the Drug Enforcement Agency decided to suddenly ban a natural substance that helps countless people who broke free from the hopeless grip of opiate addiction, and the DEA did so without any public involvement. The due process we so deserve is absent. The DEA conducted no formal studies, trials, testimonials, or public forums to aid in their decision. They claim to be crusaders against the spread of opioid narcotics. Rather than advocating for Kratom, a medicinal leaf that people stand behind as a medicine that works for them, the DEA takes it away from the People. To add further insult, any person who decides to benefit from Kratom will face federal imprisonment.

We the People use Kratom as an alternative to narcotic opioid medications and will have no other alternative but to fall back into the dark pit of opiate addiction. What is the just reason for this ban? Kratom does not claim lives. Kratom does not lead people to steal from their families. Kratom does not force people into homelessness, crime, and prostitution. Kratom is a medicine that truly helps people. Kratom simply has no reason to be placed on a list of drugs that provides no medicinal benefits and kills large numbers of people, because thousands claim that Kratom does in fact provide medicinal benefits and Kratom does not kill people.

This is what will happen in the weeks to come: hundreds of thousands will lose their ability to enjoy the benefits of Kratom and will return to their physicians for the narcotic medications they once dreaded. Since the level of paranoid physicians in years past regarding narcotic dispensing have increased, many patients will be turned away. Heroin and other illegal narcotic use will increase dramatically and people will die. This move to ban Kratom will directly claim the lives of so many people in the months to come and the Drug Enforcement Agency along with those in office who turn a blind eye are fully responsible for what happens.

I feel utterly betrayed, appalled, and disappointed in light of this ban. The public should have been included in this secretive and conniving act. We are taxpayers, we are citizens, and above all, we are Americans. We are ENTITLED to choose Kratom if it works for us. We should have the FREEDOM to choose herbal remedies over pharmaceuticals. The Government has NO RIGHT to take that freedom away from us. The DEA and the Federal Government have done a true and unjust disgrace to its people. I insist that the DEA and all relevant agencies postpone the ban and conduct clinical studies and include the public on policy making, as they should already be doing.

This letter I am writing to you should not exist because the Government should know better than to drastically change the lives of so many Americans without even allowing us to voice our opinions, comments, and concerns. This act is the very definition of oppression; something I believed our wonderful country was incapable of doing. I plead that you and all people whom we the People have placed our faith into reconsider this decision, postpone this Ban against Kratom, and include the involvement of our fellow citizens with a decision that will determine the fate of so many.

Most respectfully from your fellow American,
-[Spaethon]
